Town to spend $18k for removal

Tryon Town Hall will soon be getting moisture issues in the crawl space removed.

Tryon Town Council met March 19 and approved an $18,400 agreement with John Salmon, with Foothills Crawl Space, who said the job should take about three weeks to complete.

The town agreed to pay for half of the costs in April then the remaining balance in July when the new budget year begins.
Interim town manager Joey Davis said during former town manager Caitlin Martin’s employment, she began researching encapsulating the crawl space at town hall due to ongoing issues with mold and mildew. Davis said in the town’s strategic plan, Tryon came up with a strategy for the town hall building and one of the issues is mold and mildew.

Tryon Mayor Alan Peoples mentioned the idea to move town hall offices back to where they used to be and using the current space as a town museum and visitor’s center.

During a museum/visitor’s center meeting recently, Peoples also mentioned the mold issues and said that has to be taken care of before placing a museum and visitor’s center at town hall.

The proposal from Foothills Crawl Space includes installing drainage matting over the open soil on the first level, installing vapor barrier materials, treating the area to kill mold spores and colonies and removing surface debris including old pipes.

Salmon accepted the terms of being paid half in this year’s budget and half in next year’s budget. He also said the reason the job will take three weeks is due to excess plumbing fixtures, wires and low areas.
